The Purple Tree

What the tree looks like today, in June

This tree is right out front.

I love watching this tree in spring.

It’s a Crapapple Tree.

After the long winter, with the tree being dormant & just twigs, in early April it buds bright purple leaves.  The leaf buds grow into a deep plum color.

…… Sadly I haven’t gotten a picture of those beautiful purple leaves.  Yet.  Next year I will!

Once the leaves fully develop, it starts budding little purple flowers.

And then when the flowers start blooming, the leaves turn green.

It only takes a couple days for the leaves to go from purple to green. It is amazing!

Bright purple flowers totally covered the tree. Pretty, huh?!

This is the only tree like this on the property.

Someone planted this tree where it is in the center of the driveway.  Unfortunately it doesn’t get enough water, and the apples don’t grow to their right size.  They’re stunted.

I just never get around to watering it constantly.

There are so many buds & flowers, the tree looks pink.

The flowers bloom for about a month. It is really beautiful.

After the month of flowers, they started to die off.

The bees LOVE this tree. You can’t walk near the tree without hearing the ‘hummmmm’ of the hundreds of bees.

The bees don’t travel towards the house, they just stay at the tree.  So they’re cool with me.

Now, the tree has it’s small purple-ish red berries developing from the died off flowers.

I’ve read that crab apples make a  great preserve and jam. But because of the water issue, I just never get to use the fruit.  🙁
