And it’s April Fools today. So, how did you prank your family and friends? April Fools’ Day may be related to the ancient Roman spring festival Hilaria, which celebrates the resurrection of the god Attis. But no one truly knows where the custom began.
April is the fourth month of the year, has 30 days, and is named after the Greek goddess Aphrodite. It is commonly associated with the season of spring in the Northern Hemisphere and fall (autumn) in the Southern hemisphere.
Today is an interesting day in music history. In 1979, Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive was at #1, and stayed there for three weeks. In 1983, Kirk Hammett joined Metallica, and today in 1985, left Van Halen to pursue a solo career.
The April birth flowers are the daisy and the sweet pea. The daisy conveys innocence, loyal love, and purity. Yet, it is also a flower given between friends to keep a secret; the daisy means “I’ll never tell.” While sweet peas signify blissful pleasure, on the other hand they are also used to say good-bye.
The birthstone for April is the diamond which symbolizes innocence. The zodiac signs are Aries and Taurus.
Today in 1778, Oliver Pollock, a New Orleans businessman, created the “$” symbol, 1946, Weight Watchers was formed, and in 1987, Steve Newman became the first man to walk around the world. The walk was 22,000 miles and took 4 years.
2016 Tax Return Deadline is April 18*, 2017. *This is NOT a typo. The regular tax return filing deadline is April 15. However, due to April 15 being on a Saturday and the Washington D.C. Emancipation Day holiday being observed on April 17 instead of April 16, 2017, Tax Day is on the following Tuesday.
So what’s up in April? Well, for one, Easter’s coming up. Do you celebrate Easter? It’s on Sunday, April 16th. Do you do the religious thing, or the kid’s egg hunt? Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, thus making it the most important Christian festival of the year. On the third day, Christ’ tomb was empty, he arose, and people talked with him. Christians believe his resurrection means that they too will some day receive a new life after death.
Or maybe you celebrate Passover. It starts on April 11th, and ends April 18th. The word Passover comes from the Biblical story of the 10th plague, which God brought on Egypt for keeping the Israelites in bondage. The story says that the blood of a lamb was put on the lintel and two side posts of each Israelites’ home. When God saw the blood, this would save the people in that house.
April 27th is Take our Daughters and Sons to Work Day. Does your company do anything for the kiddos? One year my husband took the kids to work, and they got to check out a helicopter, and hold weapons like a machine gun! That’s the Army for ya.
Friday, April 28th is Arbor day. Plant a tree or three. Arbor Day is set aside for planting trees and is mostly celebrated by school children. The holiday began in Nebraska. Through the efforts of Julius Sterling Morton, a newspaper publisher, April 10, 1872 was set aside as Nebraska’s first Arbor Day. After his death, the legislature made April 22, the legal holiday for Arbor Day.

April also has a whole slew of bizarre holidays. I love bizarre holidays! Kooky & weird. Something else you’ll see me sharing on social media throughout the month. Such as, today is Edible Book Day, and International Fun at Work Day. So, if you’re at work, have fun, and….. eat a book? 😉
